He retired as Chief from National Research Development Corporation (An Enterprise of DSIR, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India), New Delhi. He has over 4 decades experience of managing innovations such as evaluation, protection and exploitation. He has transferred several technologies in the field of chemical and allied disciplines. He has served on many national committees of government of India and universities. Mr. Sharma has led many Indian delegations and travelled extensively both at home and abroad.

He currently leads Advanced Analysis Australia which is well known for in the CFD analysis fire and explosion, gas dispersion, and gas detection studies for offshore facilities including fixed platforms, FPSOs and FLNGs and onshore plants worldwide. His client list includes nearly all the major Oil and Gas operators as well as the largest engineering houses. He also leads product development for several software products.
